Mind-body medicine focuses on the interactions among the brain, mind, body, and behavior, and on the powerful ways in which emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and behavioral factors can directly affect health. For instance, recent studies suggest that the tendency to report positive, as opposed to negative, emotions may be associated with greater resistance to objectively verified colds. Mechanisms exist by which the brain and central nervous system influence immune, endocrine, and autonomic functioning, which is known to have an impact on health.

All in all, the main Mind Body Medecine techniques are acquired through specific training or intense guidance: stress management, coping skills training, cognitive-behavioral interventions, and relaxation therapy.

The Healing touch has been scientifically studied lately and proved to be effective against several health conditions

Still the later can be taught easily as these practices have been standardized to have a broader reach. Other energy techniques have a direct connection with mind body techniques thanks to the relaxation they bring to patients (e.g. yoga, tai chi, qi gong, reiki…). Mind body techniques constitute a major part of the use of Cam if we consider prayer (used by 45% of the

US prayer for health reasons). Some other Mind Body Medicine techniques have been popularized up to the point where they reached mainstream attention (e.g. patient support groups and cognitive-behavioral therapy).

All in all, Prayer (a mind body technique) is the most popular alternative medicine

Techniques are intended to calm the body (breathing techniques in yoga, tai chi, qi gong), promote health (relaxation, meditation) and have evolved towards an extended use of technology to better control the variation of heart rate or breathing. Other techniques now involve imaging (to test physical response to a stimulus) and biofeedback.

Even though min body medicine is often accused of acting like a placebo, research proved that healing psychological factors can play a role on:

  • Preventing cardiac disease (coronary artery disease notably + reduces the recurrence of cardiac disease)
  • Managing arthritis pain and other chronic pain such as low back pain
  • Ameliorating disease and treatment related symptoms of a cancer
  • Accelerating wound healing (as wound healing molecules “MMP” are heavily affected by stress)
  • Preparing to surgery (behavioral interventions have been shown to be an efficient means of reducing discomfort and adverse effects during vascular and renal procedures).
